It’s almost time for Chicago’s biggest holiday of the year—St. Patrick’s Day! If you didn’t already know, this occasion is a major celebration in the city. From viewing parties for the river dyeing and Irish dancing to vibrant block parties filled with beer, there are many ways to enjoy the festivities. There’s also lot of things happening around the city besides just the Chicago River dying! Here are my top picks for 2025, organized into three categories: Family-Friendly Activities, Date Night (or Day Date) Ideas, and Girl’s Brunch Spots.

Family Friendly

• The Step Crew at Irish American Heritage Center March 11 – a dynamic ensemble of Irish dancers renowned for their innovative blend of traditional and contemporary styles. Very family oriented.
• Shamrock’n the Block March 15 – live music, delicious food from local vendors, and plenty of green-themed activities for all ages. It has moved into a bigger location and will most likely sell out!
• Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade March 15 – a significant event in the city’s calendar, showcasing Chicago’s strong Irish heritage and community spirit. Starts at 12:15pm – get there early for a spot.
• Southside Irish Parade March 16
• Northwest Side Irish Parade March 16
• Gallagher Way March 16 – live music, face painting, lawn games, Irish dancing, and giveaways.

Day Date

• Green River Cruise – Chicago Fireboat Tours – this is pricey, but a once in a lifetime thing. They have designated family cruises or ones for the adults.
• St. Patrick’s Day River Dyeing Party at LH on 21&22 – Great location!
• Charm’d Bar – Kids allowed during the day. It runs all month long.
• Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro St Paddy’s Weekend – they have events going on all weekend.
• RPM Seafood St. Patrick’s Day River Dyeing Party
• Lizzie McNeill’s Irish Pub Indoor Morning Party

Girl’s Brunch

• River Dyeing Viewing Party at the Royal Sonesta – indoor and outdoor viewing of the river
• St. Patrick’s Day River Dyeing Party at Hyatt Regency Chicago – Indoor only
• St. Paddys Day x Pizzeria Portofino – indoor and outdoor viewing of the river
• Travelle at The Langham – indoor only
• Chief O’Neill’s Pub & Restaurant – St. Patrick’s Buffet – more of a neighborhood feel. Kids allowed early in the day.
• St. Paddy’s Chicago at Paradise Park Wicker Park

River Dying and other tips

If you plan on heading to the river dying, there’s a few things I’d recommend. Not driving! Try to take public transportation if you can. If you do need to drive, I recommend parking further west, near Orleans street. That way it’s easier to jump on the highway. Next, closer to the Michigan Ave bridge, the busier it gets. Third, if you are coming with kids, some spots I recommend warming up at are Roberts Pizza or LaBriola – I would also make reservations if you can. If you are thinking about getting a hotel room (if some are still available), Swissotel (good for families), Hyatt Regency, London House, Renaissance, The Westin and Langham are all on the river.
